173 Pounds Lost: Incredible Journey

  • 3

I have struggled since my youth with obesity.  I would yo-yo back and forth from being overweight to WAY overweight and I wanted to control it, but would lose the battle everytime.  In my 20’s, I lost over 100lbs with Weight Watchers and was delighted – I could shop in regular stores and I felt amazing – but little by little, I got away from counting my points and the weight crept back up.  I then tried Bill Phillips Body for Life program – again, I had tremendous success and was thrilled with the results – I was fit and have so much fun exercising…but gradually, I lost that momentum and stopped working out – and starting falling back into my old habits of eating (a lot).  I was a closet eater – I would go through the drive through at McDonalds and eat a meal before I went home and cooked dinner for my family – and eat again.  I was out of control…

In my 30’s, I decided that Dr. Adkin’s had it all figured out – so I started on his regimen and the weight just fell off.  I could eat as much as I wanted as long as I didn’t eat any carbs.  OK – that sounds WAY easier than it really is – but I was determined to look and feel good again…so I stuck with it.  I lost 125 lbs and was determined to NEVER eat carbs again.  It lasted 19 months.  Then I was visiting my sister in DC and she was craving a burger from Red Robin…I though about how good it sounded…a juicy burger and fries…YUM!  So I thought that I could have a burger and the next day go right back to no carbs – afterall, I had been so diligent and successful, it should be easy.  YIKES!!!  That burger was INCREDIBLE!  I tried to get back on board with the Adkin’s diet, but it was over and the weight came back – plus more.

In March of 2006, I decided to do something more drastic – something permanant.  I started investigating the gastric LapBand.  By May I had selected my surgeon and on June 26, 2006 (the day after my 36th birthday) I arrived for my surgery weighing in at an outstanding 325lbs and wearing a size 26 pants.  I was ready to do this…

The road was difficult and like Pavlov’s dog, I had some rough patches – but today, 27 months later, I weigh 152lbs, I wear a size 6 jeans and I feel incredible.  I recommend the surgery to anyone that asks me about my weight loss.  I have had no complications whatsoever and I can eat anything I want – just very small portions.  I have an incredible surgeon/dr and I would do it again in a heartbeat if I had to.  I am also quite fortunate because I haven’t had any problems with sagging skin – I am so thankful.

I hope this brief overview will encourage someone to be courageous – it isn’t easy (especially the first year), but it is absolutely worth it!

God Bless –

MJN
